White Elephant Clarification
Hi all,
I just want to be clear on the white elephant gift for the exchange this year. Is it supposed to be a gag gift type of thing, or something you have that you don't really need/want anymore that may still be a nice gift for someone else? Or, is it just whichever of those two you want to do?? When I think of white elephant, I think of gag gift. Just thought I'd try to clarify so I know what to bring!

Our Christmas family this year is really going to have an amazing Christmas morning!!! Last night, several of us went to the families house to deliver everything (all 3 truckloads and 1 van full!) What an amazing thing to be a part of. I am so thankful that we were able to do this for this family. It's very obvious to me this year that God chose this family for us. When we picked this family, we had no idea how much they really needed. I'm not talking about "wants" here, I'm talking daily ncecessities (beds, towels, bakeware...). When we did learn about everything, I was very concerned because we were so short on cash. But, we came through big!!! We were able to give them gifts for Christmas morning, and a house full of furniture! I am so thankful to everyone for helping out financially, and some of you for your donations of furniture!!! The family was very thankful to all of us. When the mom saw the gifts for the kids, tears came to her eyes, and she said her kids had never got toys before. Thank you so much. Update on Christmas Family
Babette informed me that Michelle (mother of christmas family) and her son are sleeping on air mattresses, so they are obviously in need of two beds. The family also doesn't have a dining room table or chairs, and no couch. So, Stephanie and I have spent the afternoon looking at used furniture stores to try and find some things for them. We have found some furniture at a decent price, but in no way could we get everything. So, if anyone has any furniture they would like to get rid of (or sell to us at a nice price) now would be the perfect time! We are also checking on Craigslist, but haven't found much. I cannot imagine how unbelievable it would be to give this family gifts AND furniture. Let me know if you have anything. If not, we'll keep looking for a deal and pray that God will provide.

Christmas Family
Ok Sink Family---we've got to do better than this for our christmas family. I have let the mother know that we're going to be buying gifts for the family, but like Stephanie's post said, we are still over $400 short of what we have had and would like to have. So far, we have only collected money from folks in Indiana that were at Thanksgiving. We haven't received any money from out of state this year, or anyone not at Thanksgiving. In the past, we have always had enough money for plenty of good gifts Christmas morning, and also money to help pay necessities (like electric/heat bills.) This is a large family this year, and I would love nothing more than to be able to provide them with just that. We voted and decided not to buy each other gifts, but to put that money toward our christmas family, but it seems we haven't done that. I'm not trying to lecture, even though I may be, but I think this is the most wonderful thing we as a family can do for another family, and this is a great 'new' tradition that I don't want to see us lose. Please remember how fortunate and blessed we are as a family, and how unfortunate many families are. We truely make a difference for these families. If you haven't given yet, please do so. You can send the money to either Stephanie or I. If you are going to send money, please let us know so we know how much money we have to work with because we are going to need to go shopping soon. Thank you guys so much! paulaschlarb@aol.com

Our Christmas Family
This year we have chosen a family consisting of a mother and 4 children. The mother was physically and emotionally abused by her second husband (her first husband dieed in an auto accident.) She finally left him and took the family to a women's shelter. Her husband found out where they were and moved nearby. They then left the shelter and lived at different camp grounds, in their van, for a month before the mother let her sister know their situation. The family then moved in with the mother's sister, where they stayed for several months. The moether recently moved into their own home in Bluffton and she has found a job. She is trying to start a new life for her and her children (who were also abused, mainly emotionally.) We could make an amazing impact on this family this year.
We are collecting money NOW! After collecting today, we are still over $400 short of how much money we collected last year!! Remember that we are not doing a regular Christmas exchange this year for each other, so keep that in mind when you make your donation. This is a great way for our family to show another family God's love!!
Please send money to 13835 Hamilton Meadows Lane, Ft. Wayne, IN. 46814. If you are writing a check, please make it out to me. Thanks!! We will keep you posted!

Had a beautiful day outside yesterday. We have had 21 days of rain in Oct. , 3 days of some sun and the rest dark and damp. Deer hunting begins Sat. for 9 days. Hope they get some of them around here so we dont have so much trouble with gardens and flowers.
Sister, Lois, Brothers, Kent and Garry: is it O.K. if a sister from Mn. comes to visit you over Thanksgiving? Friends from church are going to Va. and they insist that I go with them. We leave Nov.l8 arr. on Thurs.19 I hope that is O.K. I will call you tomorrow.
Steves puppy is doing good. He obeys. I think he will be a good one. N.J.

Nominate a Christmas Family
It's already that time of year again! We need to find a family or two that we are going to help make their Christmas special. I know many families are financially strapped this year, many in our own family, but we are truly blessed as a whole. We have a large, loving family that is able to truly make a difference to another family.
Someone asked me to mention this too. This year at our Christmas party, instead of buying gifts for a man/woman exchange like we usually do, maybe we could go back to white elephant gifts. Then we could take that $20 and add it to the amount that we were going to give to the Christmas family. For example, if you were going to give $25, you would now be giving $65 to the family (man & woman gift). We could really make the white elephant gift fun, like for the men, oldest tool in your garage or women, the ugliest sweater. I'll make a poll in the right hand column, please vote for what you would rather do!
If you have a family that you want to nominate, please email me. The family will always be anonymous. Also if you are ready to donate money, you can send it to me at 13835 Hamilton Meadows Lane, FW IN 46814. We need all money by Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving and Christmas
Mary Ann and I have talked about where we will have the holiday get togethers this year. She is willing to host Christmas and I had said that I would be willing to host Thanksgiving.....only I don't know how to cook a turkey!! ummm.....would that be a problem? Or is anyone else interested in having it at their house?
Last year we decided to have our Christmas get together the weekend following, but this year that would be the 26th. Is that still going to conflict with your immediate family parties? Is the 2nd a better option?
We're just looking for opinions on what everyone wants, so please discuss!!

Missy
I had to share this story with you. This morning Camden was showing me all of his papers from Sunday School and telling me his story. I asked him if he was having fun with you as his teacher and he said, "yeah, I love her really much." I thought you would like hearing that - you must be doing a good job teacher!!

Madalyn
I know some of you may already know, but many probably do not know, that Madalyn has been ill. She is doing better now.
Wednesday, Oct.14 we had to take her to the emergency room because she had a fever of 103.9, while on both tylenol and motrin. She ended up with Croup and Bronchiolitis. Friday, she seemed to have been doing a lot better, then Sat. she woke up with a temp. of 102.3 and complaining of an earache. I figured just an ear infection, we would control with tylenol and motrin until monday when we could got to the doctor. Which we tried. By Sunday night her temp was back to 103.6. But we managed it enough to get her to the doctor on Monday. Of course, the doctor was almost certain it was the flu, so Madalyn and I waited in the Dr. office until they got her flu swab results and her bloodwork results back. The good news was it wasn't the flu, the bad news is that after having the viral infection on wed. and thurs. the prior week she had gotten an ear infection caused by a bacteria. Her immune system was so wore down from fighting the viral infection it couldn't manage the bacterial one so soon after which caused it to attack her bloodstream. So, they admitted her to the hospital and gave her IV antibiotics and lots of fluids. But was not able to come home until her labs were getting better and she was drinking enough fluids. So, we were there until today. But have to keep her away from a lot of people until her immune system has a little time to recover. The doctor said about a week. So that is what has been going on here. She is on the mend and doing much better. You can tell, because today she started to not listen and be a little more defiant.

We love Lucy

Here is the newest member of our family! She is 8 weeks old today. She is a registered yellow labrador retriever. If she turns out to be a good example of the breed, we will be breeding her in a few years. What's most interesting is that this pup was born this summer on the day that our old lab Sunny, died. how sweet! come say hello to little Lucy this summer.

Christmas Gift Paid Off...
I’m sure many of you remember the “52 Weeks of Naughty Nights” gift that Brian received in the Sink Christmas gift exchange this past year. We haven’t reported much about it here on the blog, but it turned out to be a pretty good gift. We're excited to announce that we are expecting a baby in April!

KEVIN IS MOVING ALONG
Kev is doing great with the new knees. He "graduated" from going to physical therapy two weeks ago, and was very happy to tell the nazi therapists goodbye. In order to graduate he had to be able to completely staighten the legs and be able to bend them 110 degrees. He had the bend part quite a while ago but had trouble getting those muscles to stretch enough for full extension. Of course, he still has to work the knees a couple of times a day at home. He went back to work a couple of weeks ago also, working 1/2 days. Then this last week he worked full days. He came home pretty tired and achy, but we had expected that. He's still taking pain meds regularly (in smaller doses). He thinks they are making his thinking a bit slower. I won't comment on that one. After he finishes working this week, he'll be starting a new job. I'm not going to go into that one - I'll leave that to him, but I thought maybe an update on the knees should be posted for all who are wondering. Thanks for all your prayers. Kevin has said several times that this was a hard thing to go through. His phrase is "this one really knocked me on my bum". We're both so glad to have it in the past and to be moving toward total health.
UPDATE ON SAIGE
Sara had posted the website for Saige a few days ago. I would encourage all of you to check it out. It will lift your heart and renew your spirit. God is good and He is faithful.

Already had 1 round of chemo with 4 more to follow, then chemo pills for the next 2 1/2 years. So I thought we should all be praying for her and the family. I talked to Linda this morning and she should get to come home this evening then back to Indy Wed. for the chemo.

Triathalon
I'm not sure if Benny or Chris posted about the three of us doing a triathalon or not (Chris is running, Benny is biking, and I'm swimming), but I just need to state for the record that Benny is lucky I'm such a nice person. I said yes without thinking this through. Now, I'm dreaming about this and beginning to freak out a little. I have not exercised in years, and that includes swimming laps. I just hope they have a lane designated for the unhealthy ones. I may be thin, but that does not mean that I'm in shape and I'm fairly sure I will be proving this Sunday. I really need to find my swim cap, goggles, and a one-piece swimsuit (I'm not even sure I own one anymore!) This will be interesting...

The Cains would like to announce new addition of cain-ines
Maggie had 4 puppies on August 30th (beagles). There are 2 girls and 2 boys. In the pictures, the girls are on the left and the boys on the right (birth order just like the boys holding them). She had them 6 days after returning home from vacation at Grandma and Grandpa Dahlgren's where she and the other 2 dogs, Lucy and Twister (her daughters from a litter 4 years ago) stayed while the rest of the family vacationed in the Black Hills.
What a vacation! It was a camping trip and the first night in the South Dakota Badlands there was a storm and wrecked the tent! So we wound up spending 8 nights in the van - oh joy! Every night we had to rearrange things, move car seats, put the bed down in the back, recline a couple seats, get out sleeping bags and then put it all back so we could drive the next day. Of course the boys were so cooperative and appreciated the trip and didn't argue and fight at all! NOT!! We threatened that next vacation they will stay at Grandma's and Mom and Dad will go alone. We also saw Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave, Custer State Park, Devil's Tower and Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. It was at this last night in ND that we were a little glad to NOT be in the tent - we woke in the morning to find a herd of bison wandering through the campground!
The puppies are turning out to be a great distraction from the very strange quiet of the house since the boys went back to school on the 8th of September - ALL the boys. Matthew started Kindergarten (all day every day), Jacob second grade, Zachary fourth grade and Nicholas sixth grade.
I would welcome suggestions for names (calling them #1, #2, #3 and #4 is getting old). I am looking for a theme with 2 girls and 2 boys, any of which would be acceptable names to be stuck with forever since I am hoping to have my next show dog here. For example, the kids thought of Narnia - great names except we already have a Lucy. Any other great movies or books or whatever with 4 characters, 2 of each gender?

The Sink name continues on......
Had an Ultrasound today, I'm 19 weeks, and it's a boy. No doubt about it! So, the Sink name will go on. And there shouldn't be as much pressure on Kyle to have a boy when he is grown and old enough that is. Just wanted to update everyone.

Happy Anniversary
If you two would be home once in a while we could have a party, I think you're getting as bad as the Bender's. Hope you are having a great Anniversary and trip!!
Cedar Point
We went to Cedar Point this past weekend and had so much fun! We went with Carl's family and took the kids with us. They had so much fun riding all sorts of rides. Camden is a huge fan of everything, even some pretty decent sized roller coasters! (We're so proud!) And Grant did really well too. The poor guy went on a roller coaster at 2 that I wouldn't have gone on at 12! Granted, he had his head down and was crying most of the time, but he was a trooper! I think we will have a couple of roller coaster kids some day, which will make some GREAT family trips!

My sister in law taped the roller coaster that Camden really liked. She zooms in a lot on my brother in law and niece, but Carl and Camden are in the seat in front of them. Carl is wearing a green shirt and glasses and Camden is almost impossible to see.

Greetings from Golf Shores!
Greetings from Golf Shores!
Thursday finds us holed up in the 6800 sq. ft. "castle" as Camden calls it. Beautiful weather...until today!! Some went shopping, and some are huddled around the internet, which hasn't worked well for us, so we haven't reported anything until now.
We have sunburns and suntans and full bellies. We saw the Blue Angels practice one day and now the little boys want to be pilots. You just can't watch that and not be a proud American...especially when they called out the children at the end to welcome the planes and pilots as they landed. It was a practice, but WOWed us all!
The ocean is beautiful~we've seen dolphins from the balcony, Tamie found a live conch and Steve caught it, Carl got stung (several times) by a wasp in his shoe, Lamberts throwed rolls still taste wonderful, the kids are having a great time in and out of the water, Kevin is getting along well and traversing the steps - all 2 flights - (to the lowest level) just fine. He's had therapy from the resident PT and gone to the hospital to donate blood...I mean have blood taken for tests his Dr. ordered.
WISH YOU WERE HERE!!!!!!!!

Your Flowers are Beautiful, Benders.
We have been busy the past 3 weeks, with two sets of company from Norway. Had a great time. Bennie, you missed out on your peaches; I;m eating them now. You missed out on peach pies made by Tamie. We took the Norwegians to an Indian Pow Wow, Itasca State Park, and Laurie and Sara & Ethan to a rodeo. I slept 12 hours the first night I was alone!!!
Hope all of the Smith Family are having a Great time at Gulf Shores, Ala. Sorry I couldnt come. We still are very busy at the resort, and our Mr. Shore Patrolmen couldnt stay and finish his duties.!!
Both Stephen and Sara lost their beloved dogs the past couple of weeks. Sunny died yesterday and Steves Cooter died a couple of weeks ago. Sunny was the Mother of all the pets that we have. Laurie lost her 19 yr old ?, cat and daschund.
That is some news from Valhalla for now. We are finally getting some summer temps.

Chloe's first day of school!
I can't believe that I just survived putting my baby on the school bus. She definitely didn't have a hard time getting on the bus, however, it was very difficult to let her go. I did make it home before shedding any tears. She is officially a kindergartener now!
